Matins – Divine Liturgy of St. James

The ancient Divine Liturgy of Saint Iakovos the Brother of the Lord constituted the Eucharistic sequence of the Church of Jerusalem.
In the 9th and 10th centuries, the liturgical formalities of Saint John Chrysostom and Basil the Great were generally established in the Great Church of Christ in Constantinople. In the 19th century, the Divine Liturgy of St. James was celebrated very rarely, while in the 20th century this liturgical custom was renewed in Greece and is celebrated in memory of the Apostle James (October 23).
The Divine Liturgy differs in order from the later liturgies of the Byzantine standard, Basil the Great and John Chrysostom. The reading from the Holy Bible takes place in the center of the Church and the priest faces the faithful during the Divine Liturgy. Also, Holy Communion is offered to the faithful differently, as they partake separately of the Lord’s blood and body, as was customary until the 5th century.
This Liturgy is somewhat reminiscent of the Church we read in the Acts of the Apostles and in the writings of the early Fathers.
According to Archimandrite Eleftherios Balakos, from this liturgy we must always keep simplicity in mind. The simpler we are in worship, the more we allow Christ to be revealed. Also, the participation of the people. The auspicious speech is intense. The so-called blessings of the Liturgy are not only for the officiating priest. We understand this from the “early” reading that helps in the common prayer and training of the believers! These wishes are written in the plural because they concern the congregation as a whole. With the secret recitation and essentially hiding it from the congregation, we deprive our lay brothers of important and lofty prayers and above all the “right” they have, a “right” that derives from Baptism and the crismation they have received with which they belong “to the holy nation, the royal priesthood” and as the great theologian Panagiotis Trebelas pointed out, in Worship we have a co-ministery of clergy and people! Participation can also be seen from the joint recitation of “I believe”, “Our Father” and because the hymns are simple in that they can still be sung together. The exchange of the embrace of peace with our neighbors, which helps us to open up and understand that the Church is not an individual event but a community affair. Only in the church we are saved.
